Manga Jiman 2016 Exhibition and Comics update

First blog post of the year 2017! So, I finally managed to update the comics page with my Manga Jiman entry from 2015, entitled “Shadow of a Doubt”. I did want to add it last year, but I kept forgetting ^^;. It was an idea that I came up with just two weeks before the deadline of the competition, so I really had to rush myself to complete it. I was really surprised that I managed to get 5th place in the competition that year (2015) but I was happy it was well received by the judges. Please give it a read, you can find it under the comics tab :).

The Manga Jiman competition is something I challenge myself to enter every year. Some years I didn’t enter because I struggled with ideas too much, but since 2013 I have somehow managed to make the shortlist of the top 10 entries. Being shortlisted in this recent competition (2016) now makes that four times in a row and five times in total! It is always very humbling for me to know that people enjoy reading my stories and hope I can try more ambitious projects in future. Anyway, my entry from last year is entitled “Views of Sakura” and if you’re around London, you can view it at the Japan Embassy’s current exhibition, between now and the 31st March 2017! More details can be found on the Japan Embassy website. I have no idea where I placed yet, but will update once I know (I hope I can keep this website more frequently updated this year, honestly ^^;).

Dear Deer

So, one morning I woke up with an image of a deer with antlers that bloom flowers. I’m not quite sure why I had this image in my mind but I thought it was too interesting and vivid an image not draw, so I did :D!  (If you like this image, a print is available for you to buy from my new INPRNT store here.)

How dear can a deer get? 🙂 I really enjoyed working on this illustration. Created directly on Photoshop.

B is for Basilisk

It’s been months since I’ve completed my ‘Aspidochelone’ piece so I thought it’s about time that I’ve completed my BASILISK!

© Pamela Lokhun 2015. All rights reserved,
The Basilisk is the king of serpents that is born from the yolkless egg of a seven year old rooster, hatched by a toad. Because there is no definite look to a basilisk I drew inspiration for it’s design directly from the creature’s background.

To get an idea for the visual look of the basilisk, I did quick study sketches of related animals from looking at photos on the internet.

Secondary ideas. It’s the ‘King of Serpents’ so even though I quite like the legged versions, in the end I opted for the more snake-like design.

The basilisk has the ability to turn anyone to stone with just one glance. I don’t know if that’s on eye contact or if it can turn anything to stone just by looking at it, but personally I think its either by eye contact or at will. As this creature is the king of serpents I decided that I’d really like to include the rooster crown to symbolise it. I think the final design works rather well but the fun thing about this creature is that there is no definitive look to it and you could really take its design into many directions. I’m not sure how many hours it taken me to complete the illustration as I’ve been working on it on and off but I might try alternate versions of this basilisk in future.

A is for Aspidochelone

Finally, my first post of the year. We are three months into 2015 but anyway, Happy New Year!

I’ve realised recently that I don’t draw creature art often enough so I’ve decided to challenge myself by drawing an A-Z of mythical creatures (one creature for each letter of the alphabet). I got the idea after finding an A-Z of fantasy creatures in an old issue of ImagineFX so I’ll be basically creating my own versions of each creature listed in that (I hope I’ll be able to keep this up).

So without further ado, here is my rendition of an ASPIDOCHELONE.

On closer inspection there is a ship… and on closer inspection, the ship’s crew have just realised that is not an island.

This probably took me between 7-9 hours to complete at 300dpi (over the course of two days, I lost track of time). I didn’t know what an Aspidochelone was before. It was described as a giant turtle big enough to be mistaken for an island, so with this in mind, I took inspiration from images of turtles and rocky coastlines and tried combining the two elements together. I practiced sketching a few turtles before starting the main image and mainly took reference from the “Loggerhead turtle” as a base. I also thought that if the creature is mistaken for an island so often, its skin might be exhibiting an earthy, rock like texture so I’ve tried to illustrate that in the image. Overall I’ve tried to depict the creature as less of a monster and more of an unknowing animal that’s just going about its own business. I hope I succeeded!

Site Update (04/06/2014)

I’ve successfully moved the website to a new hosting provider and have managed to import my previous blog posts (yay!). Unfortunately I had to reupload the blog images but thankfully there weren’t too many. Also, I’ve found a really nice WordPress theme to work with! Hopefully now it won’t be too long until the rest of the website is up and running.

Manga Jiman 2013 Exhibition

Last year (2013) I entered the annual Manga Jiman competition (held by the Japan Embassy in London) and found out early on this year that I was shortlisted as a winner!

I wasn’t really expecting to win anything at all, mainly because I rushed my entry and pushed myself to finish it as the deadline drew to a close (I was really determined to enter this year no matter what)! I haven’t entered the competition since 2009 (in 2008 I placed 5th with my entry, “Dilemma”) so overall, I just felt good about submitting something after so long ;u;.

A couple of weeks ago,  I attended the opening ceremony of the Manga Jiman 2013 Exhibition at the Japan embassy and there I found out where I placed… 9TH!

What she says is the truth!.. Uh… but she doesn’t actually say this in the comic. I just edited this panel for added effect  (Image from my 2013 Manga Jiman entry “Portfolio of lies”).

My comic “Portfolio of Lies” placed 9th (yay)! That’s not bad for someone who wasn’t expecting to place. During the party at the embassy (that sounds posh doesn’t it?) I was very happy to hear that my entry was well received and that people genuinely enjoyed reading it (thank you everyone who gave me positive feedback, it gave me such a warm fuzzy feeling inside ;u;). I’ll try my best to enter again this year, hopefully next time round I will do even better ^_^. Congratulations to all the winners!

The Manga Jiman 2013 exhibition is currently open at the Japan Embassy in London until late April. More details, including a full list of winners, can be found on the Japan Embassy website (visit while you still can :D)!

The Sun King

My characterised version of King Louis XIV. I’m planning to feature him in one of my comics.

Work in progress shots. The final piece looks considerably different to the original sketch.

A stylised, characterised version of King Louis XIV (who was given the name “The Sun King”). He had the longest reign as a monarch in Western Europe (75 years)! Anyway, I had a go at painting him as I want to include him in a comic I am planning. I won’t say too much about it just yet, but its going to be set in historical France. I wanted to give this image a classic feel to it and tried to imitate baroque style paintings (classic painting always inspire me in some way ^_^).

I’ve decided to go ahead and plan out my comics. I’ve had so many ideas in my head for a very long time so I’m going to try my best to bring them out to fruition (I really hope I do u_u).
